After earning her bachelor’s degree from the ��˾�������� in 2022, Lauren Schexnider began her career with Guice Offshore, a maritime transportation company operating offshore supply vessels. 

The role exposed Schexnider to a range of industries, from oil and gas to aerospace and research. It also made her realize she wanted a deeper understanding of business practices.

“I am passionate about learning the ‘how' and 'why' of business and knew that MBA was the right path to expand my knowledge,” she said. 

She needed a program that could fit around her career while helping her develop practical business skills she could apply right away.

For Schexnider, it offered another opportunity. 

“My family and coworkers also encouraged me to participate in the study abroad program, explaining that, ‘Study abroad is the best part of an MBA,’" says Schexnider.

After spending 10 days in Costa Rica as part of IBUS 540, she understands why. 

“Stepping outside of the online classroom and experiencing international business firsthand was impactful,” she says. “Being able to learn about another countries' business practices from company directors, presidents, or CEOs is an experience that no book, discussion forum, or online class could have offered me.” 

The course focuses on global issues, including health, climate action, innovation, and cultural preservation — all deeply relevant in Costa Rica where more than 25% of the country is protected by the national park system.

“I went in wondering how businesses in Costa Rica operate with such strict sustainability guidelines,” says Schexnider. “I quickly learned that what seemed like strict guidelines to me are morals, values, and overall way of life in Costa Rica.”

Among the organizations Schexnider and her classmates visited was Cinco Ramas Farm, an organic and regenerative farm that produces spices and medicinal plants.

“They explained that they strive to achieve a regenerative business, with an overall goal of improving their soil to create quality crops for consumers, treating their customers and employees with value and respect, and creating a valuable working environment and culture,” Schexnider says. 

“It challenged me to think differently about leadership, business responsibility, and global impact. I was able to see in real-time how businesses in Costa Rica are sustainable, regenerative, and create circular economies.”

With students from Utah, New Jersey, Minnesota, California, and Louisiana, the MBA study abroad experience created a unique opportunity for Schexnider and her classmates to form meaningful connections while expanding their networks.

“I communicate daily with a few classmates since arriving back home, with plans to reconnect over the summer,” she says. “We’ve even encouraged some out-of-state students to attend and walk for graduation!”

Courses in the MBA degree program are offered in accelerated 8-week terms to give students maximum flexibility in setting their degree pace. Offered during the three-week summer intercession, the Costa Rica MBA study abroad program is even more condensed. 

For Schexnider, the course provided an outsized return. 

“The study abroad course option is a great opportunity to experience education through a new lens,” she says. 

“It opens your mind to new experiences and possibilities and gives you a special appreciation of the country you are visiting as well as your home country. I would recommend a study abroad course to anyone pondering the idea."
